Shoe shopping anyone?

our bikes

Ken, Elliot, Kim, Kelly & Jen - supper excited for the ride!

Our first Stop - coffee making shop

Our guide! He was fun!

Me grinding coffee beans! Kutwanga - this is a Swahili's woman's most important item. It is used to grind everything!

Roosted coffee beans & hot water pot on coal tray

Kashata - peanut brittle type stuff but softer and sweeter - but has nuts in it so I didn't particularly like it. It is served with coffee because the coffee is extremely strong!

Ken our director trying to be cool! Notice the Startsucks! (jibe against sarbucks!)

Corridor of the home that makes & sells coffee

2nd stop - Chapti and Chi time!

This woman makes the best Chapati I have had yet!

Local home that has 6 families staying it (children of the families in pics above). Each family have one room. And this is the bathroom! The surer dumps right next to it and creates a breading ground for Mosquitoes = Malaria Also while the US and President G.W. Bush helped provide mosquito nets to all woman with children - they don't work well because they were made for a standard bed not a square room were everyone sleeps.

Bridge the funds from the tour company built as a community project. This bridge crosses a river that almost all the garbage in the city finds it way to and ends up here. One of the poorest areas of Dar.

Those buildings to the back are the bathrooms for the community.

The bike tour company and volunteers had the river cleaned out in October! I never would have guess it had ever been cleaned up!

Local Play ground for the kids!

Local woman takes rices bags and leftover fabric from the tailor and makes rugs like this one.

Sheesha Tree! The tall skinny thing.

Local Grave Site

Local Pharmacy

Movie Theater Playing List!

The movie theater! Hosts the soccer matches when those are playing as well!
Local 2nd Hand and Fabric Market

Soko = Market - Farmers Product - eating Pineapple!

Traditional Art - Fans, food mates, food plate covers - once the use of them is finished they are hung on the wall for art
The End! - Tired Sweaty Hungry and ready to eat!
This Bike tour with Afroroots last Sunday was one of the best experiences and fun times I have had getting to experience/learn the local culture and life. I thought it was a lot of fun while some of the others didn't particularly enjoy it, but I would love to do it again in a different area of the town! It was originally planned that we do the bike tour another weekend, but with the protest going on I think Ken liked the idea of getting us off campus! It was also a good substitute for the hiking trip the girls had planned for that weekend that didn't happen; although, we do hope to reschedule for maybe this coming weekend!

  1. Hi Kim,
It sounds like you're really experiencing a lot of there! It's fun to read about your adventures & see the pictures but I'm also glad to hear you're staying SAFE! sorry to hear that the internship isn't what you had hoped for, but good for you for sticking with it and trying to make something out of it. Your dedication and enthusiasm alone will be helpful to whoever you work with!
