Random Things I have Observed & Learned About Campus Life!

So I would like to start with the fact that "kids" in there twenties are the same everywhere! - so I have decided to assume, but it is now an educated assumption. Here are some random observations and things I have learned in just the last few days on campus:

  1. All girls talk about boys!
  2. We all are addicted to Cell phones, TV and Computers. If we get the chance we will use them! And everyone has their silly TV shows they just have to watch! (My roommate has a TV and she watches a lot of it-soap operas!)
  3. Students still fall asleep in class.
  4. Skirts are warren for more then just conservative/appropriate dress! It is really hard to use the bathroom when you are not wearing one! (I am getting more made!)
  5. Tanzanians keep very tidy and clean spaces - clean in African standards.
  6. Africans eat more then rice & beans - but it is the cheapest thing to eat. A lot of fruit - nanasi (pineapple is sooo good!)
  7. The monkeys and local baboon are like deer!
  8. Students, Faculty, & Staff are very proud of their University and what it stands for in Tanzania. Just like back home in the states! GO VANDALS!
  9. Birthdays are not really celebrated. Which I think is kind of weird and sad.
  10. Everyone goes "out" on the weekend and has a good time. (So Ethan maybe you will get a goodnight text! haha) They also go to the mall -not just to "shop" like in American but to take advantage of the air conditioning.
  11. Same sex - are pretty open and not modest. -I can walk around in my underwear - its like I am back at KD! :)
  12.  Plagiarism is not a concept here. Text books are so expensive that the library only has one and students can make copies of their readings. No one buys books.
  13. At the cafeteria everyone sits in their groups of friends and does not want to intrude on different groups. It is like high school all over again, but we don't know enough Swahili to strike up conversations yet so all the minority white kids from the U.S. sit together!
  14. Naps are a must! (what college kid does not take them!)
  15. Muziki is an important part of everyone's life. (music)
  16. Family & Friends are important - more than just the nuclear family like in the U.S.
  17. Walking alone at night is something every girl around the world worries about.
  18. Carpet is not shaggy soft stuff on the floor it is like plastic sticky flooring that Tanzanians are very proud to have.
I am sure I will have more to add to this list as the months go by! I am off to Bagamoyo tomorrow for an overnight trip with CIEE. It is the old/traditional part of town and it is suppose to be really cool and  a lot of fun.
